Visit to the Delta Senior Home

Visit to the Delta Senior Home
March 14th, we visited the seniors again. A friend played the piano that is in the lounge and another friend played guitar. We also had two teens join us this time to sing to the residents who loved the worship and sing-along time. As usual, the visit concluded with chatting and a promise from us to visit again. These visits to the senior home have brought a new perspective on life for me.
The days of our lives are seventy years;
And if by reason of strength they are eighty years,
Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow;
For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
Our time on earth is very temporary. There is a day, right down to the last second which only the Lord knows, when we will leave and go to our heavenly eternal dwelling. It gives rise to an important question. How would I like to be remembered? What legacy will I leave for those who will continue living after my departure? Will my life be a testimony of God’s goodness, His faithfulness and love. Did I live the life that Jesus died to give me? Was I a faithful witness for Him, sowing seed and bringing people into His Kingdom? Can I say “I have run the race, I have finished what the Lord gave me to do”? So many questions.
As I was pondering on these questions, one thought stood out. Everyone has been given one primary Kingdom purpose which would be each person’s life purpose. For Jesus, it was to die for the redemption of everyone who would believe in Him to be reconciled to God the Father.
Jesus did not get distracted when Peter tried to stop Him or when they tried to make Him King or even when they tried to throw Him off a cliff. He stayed laser focused on His purpose on earth. At the time of writing this newsletter, we are celebrating Palm Sunday and His triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The same people who cried “Hosanna to the Son of David” later shouted ‘crucify Him, crucify Him”.
The cross is a place of victory. His victory became our victory. He said it is finished.
Are we on track to complete our lives in the Lord on earth and be ready for departure?
The visits to the senior home have become more than a visit to minister to the residents. These visits are a reminder for the need to stay on course, focused on the life calling and to finish well.
I encourage you to take a few minutes to pause from the busy pace of life that most of us are living in, pray and check in with the Lord so you know you are running your race and not someone else’s. Be mindful of distractions that may be ‘good’ things but not the ‘right’ thing for your life. Be blessed mightily!

Hidden Labour of Love
“We can have the meeting at my place”, I said hesitantly, secretly hoping someone else would offer their home to host our monthly cell group meeting.
The thought of cleaning my house for guests made me groan inwardly. I sighed as I made a mental checklist. Mop the floor, clean the kitchen, wipe the counters, clean the washrooms, tea, coffee, what to serve…. But never, on any of the occasions I’ve had guests, did cleaning the top of the kitchen cupboards, make it to my checklist. Why? Because no one would see it.
But we read of a man named Huram, hired by King Solomon to do the bronze work for the 1st temple of Jerusalem, spending days, weeks and months, choosing to carve intricate designs and artwork, where no one would see.
15 He cast two bronze pillars, each eighteen cubits high and twelve cubits in circumference.
16 He also made two capitals of cast bronze to set on the tops of the pillars; each capital was five cubits high.
18 He made pomegranates in two rows encircling each network to decorate the capitals on top of the pillars. He did the same for each capital.
19 The capitals on top of the pillars in the portico were in the shape of lilies, four cubits high.
20 On the capitals of both pillars, above the bowl-shaped part next to the network, were the two hundred pomegranates in rows all around.
Why did Huram carve lilies and 200 pomegranates on top of each pillar where no one could see?
People only saw the pillars at the entrance to the temple, but the Lord saw the details on top of the pillars. As we serve the Lord, it is sometimes necessary to pause and focus on some reflective questions:
- What is your motivation to serve the Lord? Love for Him or because people now expect it from you?
- Have you settled into a comfortable church role that has become routine and mundane?
- What is the fire that’s fanning your work? Your position, skills and reputation, or obedience to the Holy Spirit?
- What is the ‘what’, ‘why’ and ‘how’ in your service to the Lord?
- How do you accomplish hidden tasks that people don’t see? Are you giving it your bare minimum effort or working with a spirit of excellence to please your Redeemer?
“If the Holy Spirit was withdrawn from the church today, 95% of what we do would go on, and no one would know the difference.”
– A.W. Tozer
This famous quote by A.W Tozer, is sobering, as it is shocking, because it is true. When our ministries are Spirit driven, there are signs and wonders that follow. People are delivered and healed, families are blessed, communities come together and revival sweeps through the Church.
Huram was probably never complimented, or his work acknowledged because it was hidden from human eyes but his audience was the Lord, and he worked with fervor to please Him. God’s gifts to His people are irrevocable and we can easily slip into doing kingdom work emotionally and in the flesh.
for God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.
The surest way to find out if our heart is in the right place is examining how and what we do behind the scenes, with no applause, recognition or appreciation by anyone. It’s for His eyes only.
Prayer: Lord, help us to remember that you weigh the reins of our hearts. May our service to You be done with fervor and excellence, and our only goal be to lift up the name of Jesus.
